One's Observations

A collection of some things I observe along the way.

Put these pieces together and see what you come up with:

The Russian system, called the S-300, is one of the most advanced multi-target anti-aircraft-missile systems in the world today and has a reported ability to track up to 100 targets simultaneously while engaging up to 12 at the same time. It has a range of about 200 kilometers and can hit targets at altitudes of 27,000 meters.

"If Russia goes through with the sale of its most advanced anti-aircraft missile system to Iran, Israel will use an electronic warfare device now under development to neutralize it and as a result present Russia as vulnerable to air infiltrations, a top defense official has told The Jerusalem Post." "Russia said the freighter Arctic Sea was seized by pirates in the Baltic Sea in late July after leaving a Finnish port. Russian naval vessels intercepted the ship weeks later off Cape Verde, thousands of kilometers from the Algerian port where it was purportedly supposed to deliver a load of timber...A Russian shipping expert and an EU anti-piracy official have speculated that the vessel was carrying a clandestine cargo, possibly S-300 surface-to-air missiles for Iran or Syria." "Instead of going ahead with the sale, however, Russia has employed the possible export of the missiles as a powerful diplomatic lever. The Kremlin has already secured a promise from Israel not to sell weapons to Georgia, Russia's arch enemy." "Moscow has also used the possible sale of the S-300 to place pressure on America. Russia has reportedly promising to cancel the contract with Iran if Washington abandons its plans for a missile defence shield in central Europe." (Telegraph Article)

"To understand why the S-300 is so important, first you need to understand that Iran does not have a conventional, modern military that can defend a line on a map. Its fleet of fighter planes is so old it includes a US F-14 Tomcat given to Iran before the Islamic revolution. If Israel were to order air strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities with their modern F-15s and brand new fleet of F-16Is (The ‘I’ indicates customized for Israel) Israeli fighter crews would make such easy work of destroying the Iranian air force, prudence dictates that Iran never clear a single fighter for takeoff. According to KT McFarland Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Reagan, the S-300 “Is a game changer." (
